History and Background : Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT)

According to authors authors, Roth and Lee, Vygotsky's CHAT theory is one of the best kept secrets of academia (Roth and Lee: 2007). A statement by Lev Vygotsky seven decades ago was made that educational psychology was in a state of crisis because of "atomistic and functional modes of analysis (Roth and Lee: 2007). The development of the CHAT theory by Alexi Leont'ev in the early 1960's was based on Lev Vygotsky's theories of learning and cognition (Roth and Lee: 2007)
The Activity theory was used extensively in Russia in the areas of play and learning. Yrjö Engeström and Mike Cole promoted the implications of the activity theory in organisational development (Roth and Lee: 2007).

  1. Nice start but I would suggest that when you use a reference/quote you do the 'academic' thing and provide a full reference at the end.
